Australian Telephone Numbering Plandh

Australia's fixed lines begin with a two digit area code followed by an eight digit local number.

Example: 02 8XXX XXXX. The area code is not required when calling locally.

Australia's mobile numbers use ten digits which all begin with 04, followed by two digits (formerly a mobile network code), and the subscriber's six digit number, always dialled in full.

Example: 0402 XXX XXX

Country Code

Australia's telephone country code is 61 which is required to be dialled before the area code (without the preceeding 0) and the local number for calls originating from outside Australia.

Fixed line example: +61 2 8XXX XXXX

Mobile example: +61 402 XXX XXX

International Direct Dialling
The international direct dialling (IDD) prefix for Australia is 0011 for voice calls and 0015 for fax calls (or 0019 through Optus). For example, to call the UK mobile number 07654 123 123 from Australia, you would dial:

0011 (IDD code) + 44 (UK country code) + 7654 123 123 (mobile number without the 0)

Emergency Services
000 is the emergency telephone number in Australia for access to Ambulance, Fire and Police emergency services. The internationally recognised GSM mobile emergency number 112 will also work for emergency calls originating from mobile phones.

Free Call, Toll Free & Premium Rate Numbers
Australia uses the free call prefix of 1800 for calls from fixed line telephones. Calls to 1800 numbers may incur a charge when made from mobile phones.

There are also 13 and 1300 numbers which are charged at the cost similar to a local call. These types of telephone numbers are not accessible from outside Australia.

The 190X prefix is for premium rate services such as recorded information, competition lines, adult chat lines, psychics etc. These types of calls usually incur very high rates.
